Welcome to Pittsburgh Area Geologic Sites
The purpose of this website is to provide a summary of sites of geologic interest in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania region. The information is intended for use by University of Pittsburgh students, local K-12 teachers, and the general public. To get to the Site Pages you may either: 1) Click on Site List above and choose the site of interest or 2) Click on Regional Geologic Map above and choose a site in a Formation of interest or 3) Click on Regional Highway Map above and choose a site in an area of interest or 4) Click on Regional Stratigraphy above and then choose the rock sequence of interest. You may then choose the outcrop section you want to examine. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING DISCLAIMER! Field geology is inherently dangerous. Rock falls, misused equipment, biting insects, snakes, poisonous plants, highway traffic, etc. all provide serious hazards. The author and host of this site bear no responsibility for injury sustained by those who visit the sites listed herein. Wear safety glasses when using a rock hammer and make sure you ask permission before visiting a site on private property. Other Notes Please feel free to download and/or copy materials from this site, but be sure to reference the source! You will notice that the downloadable images on this site are rather large and will take a while to load. This is necessary to preserve the important detail of many of the images. Most have been thumbnailed to reduce initial loading time.
