Regional Stratigraphy The following stratigraphic section is of the Pennsylvanian through Permian rocks exposed in southwestern Pennsylvania. Gray is shale, blue is limestone, black is coal, and yellow is sandstone. An 'M' next to a name indicates that it is a marine (ocean deposited) formation. Click on the Period or Group on the left to take you to individual sections showing available outcrops. Strat column colors match those on the Geologic map of Pennsylvania (1980).
