IVIS Graduate Students Awarded Fellowships!
Two graduate students (Adam Carter and Stephen Scheidt) from the Department's
IVIS Laboratory have recently won awards and
prestigious Fellowships that will fully support their Ph.D. graduate research at the
University of Pittsburgh.
Adam Carter was awarded a Mellon Fellowship for his
proposal, "Bezymianny Volcano lava dome: A quantitative satellite and field-based
thermal infrared investigation". The Mellon Fellowship is designed to help junior scholars
gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources. He also was awarded
Henry Leighton Memorial Scholarship in March 2006 by the Department.
Stephen Scheidt was a awarded an
Earth System Science Fellowship by NASA for his proposal,
"Using multi-sensor data fusion to estimate dust aerosol composition and its affect on
longwave radiative forcing. The purpose of the NASA Fellowship Program is to ensure
continued training of interdisciplinary scientists to support the study of the Earth as
a system. Steve also was awarded the "Best Poster" presentation at the University's Grad
Expo in 2006.
The funds from both fellowships will support one year of funding for Steve and Adam
in order to continue their Ph.D. research.
