In Remembrance of Department of Geology and Environmental Science Emeritus Faculty Dr. Walter Pilant
Professor Walter L. Pilant passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on
December 15th, 2017. Born in Los Angeles, California, he graduated from Caltech in 1953 with a BS, and from UCLA in 1960 with a PhD. He served in the Army, and moved to Pittsburgh in 1963 where he taught geophysics for over 30 years at the University of Pittsburgh.
He is the author of “Elastic Waves in the Earth,” published by Elsevier. He loved field work and traveled all over the US with students (and family!)
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol, and their children Michael of Texas, Mark of New Hampshire, Michelle and Jeffrey of Pittsburgh, and Andrew of Israel. He will be greatly missed by his many grandchildren and great grandchildren, here and abroad, who love him very much.
He will be remembered as a teacher, mentor, author, scientist, and speaker who was passionate about his research.
