News from Ian Skilling
PhD student co-supervised by Dr. Skilling won the award for best student presentation at the
2nd International Maar Conference (Hungary, September 2004). Murray McClintock's presentation
was entitled, Phreatomagmatic Vent Complexes Emplaced During the Opening Phase of Karoo LIP
volcanism, South Africa. Murray is now based at the University of Otago, New Zealand. His
PhD research was funded by an NSF award to Dr. Skilling and Professor Bruce Houghton (University

Dr. Skilling will co-chair a session at the joint GSA-AAPG-SEPM meeting in San Jose
(29 April to 1 May 2005) with Professor Cathy Busby (University of California-Santa
Barbara) entitled, Volcaniclastic Strata: Process, Paleogeography and Tectonic
