Planetary Science![]() The long tradition of research in the department focuses on planetary surface processes and developing the tools needed to carry out studies. Current topics include lava/ice interaction, impact and volcanological cratering, and eolian transport processes on Mars. In addition, remote sensing and spectroscopy research centers on developing new image processing tools, theoretical modeling, laboratory experiments, and studies of terrestrial analog field sites. Department researchers are also involved in the NASA Astrobiology program, instrument development, and meteorite recovery from Antarctica.
