Volcanology and Remote Sensing

Volcano

Remote sensing is used as a tool to better understand geologic processes and is a specific research focus in the department. Students have access to new instrument development/data to study active eruption monitoring, desertification processes, urban growth, and planetary geologic mapping. The volcanology research program relies heavily on remote sensing to monitor explosive activity at a volcano and mitigate the resulting hazards. Other volcanological research includes the interaction of magma and water/ice/sediment, the evolution of sub-glacial volcanoes, and basalt volcanism on Earth and Mars.
