Academic Problems

If classes are not going as well as you hoped, for whatever reason, it is important to take action as soon as possible.  Why wait?  The first thing you should do is talk to the instructor and/or teaching assistant in the classes that are not going well.  The sooner you let these folks know that things are not going well, the easier it is for them to be helpful.  If the problems are purely academic, it is worth paying a visit to the Academic Resource Center to see what advice they can give you to more effectively study for your classes.  If the problems are more physiological, read on!

Feeling Stressed Out, Anxious, Depressed, Other?

By nature, college is a time for transition and growth; it can also be a time for stress and adjustment. The University Counseling Center (UCC) is the primary mental health service for students. The UCC offers a variety of mental health services to students utilizing a short-term, time-limited approach, including assessment, counseling and psychotherapy services (individual, group, and couples), and psychiatric services.  If you cannot get enough attention at the UCC, be sure to ask them about referrals to private therapists!

In addition, the UCC provides crisis intervention, consultation, referral, and outreach services to students, as well as faculty and staff of the University of Pittsburgh. Specialized counseling, consultation, and outreach services are offered through the UCC’s Sexual Assault Services and Substance Abuse Services programs. UCC services are provided by a multidisciplinary staff of mental health professionals that includes psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and advanced graduate trainees in various mental health disciplines. The UCC, as part of the University of Pittsburgh community, is committed promoting the health, as well as the personal, academic, and career development of all University students.
