GES researchers Dr. Ian T.W. Flynn, Dr. Mike Ramsey, and Dr. Evan Collins used satellite data and machine learning to identify a thermal buildup occurring one month before the 2022 eruption of Mauna Loa volcano, a potentially critical early warning signal. Their study, published in the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, also tracked lava flow velocity and compared ground elevations before and after the eruption, data that could help scientists predict lava flow paths and issue timely warnings. The findings also have implications for studying volcanic activity on other planets.
The research was highlighted in Inside Pitt Research in May 2026, as well as on Earth.com. Congratulations, Ian, Mike, and Evan!
