The University Sustainability Committee has added two Graduate Student Representatives!
Becky Tisherman is a 3rd year PhD student in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science working with Dr. Dan Bain. Becky’s research tackles challenging questions about the impacts of legacy metal contamination on agricultural production. She is working on the Yunnan, China project, quantifying the contribution of legacy contamination to metal loads to receiving waters.
Marjike Hecht is a PhD student in the School of Education, and was previously the Director of Education for the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Marijke focuses on environmental education, youth development, and nature. She worked for nearly 20 years in a variety of educational settings, including teaching middle school math and science in NYC public schools, teaching adults English in Bolivia, and educating community members about local environmental health and stewardship of Pittsburgh's greenspaces.
The dB-SERC Leader Awards for 2017-2018 Year were awarded to Dr. Danielle Andrews-Brown and Dr. Kyle Whittinghill!
The Research Spotlight highlighting Dr. Thomas' paper, "Global Assessment of Groundwater Sustainability Based On Storage Anomalies" has been placed in the research spotlight on EOS. The goal of this research was to incorporate monthly changes of storage into an evaluation of groundwater sustainability in the largest and most productive global aquifers. Whereas previous methods used a linear trend to quantify changes in groundwater storage, this research applied well-known performance indicators to remotely-sensed observations from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites to quantify sustainability metrics.
