Biography

Dr. Jennifer Smith is a part-time instructor for the department of Geology and Environmental Science in the areas of GIS and Remote Sensing. Currently, she is the Senior Product owner for GIS applications, ESRI's Utility Network as well as Schneider Electric's ArcFM Web and ArcFM Mobile, as they support electric utilities operations at Duquesne Light Company (DLC), here in Pittsburgh. Dr. Smith received a PhD in Geography from West Virginia University in 2015 and worked as an Assistant Professor at WVU and Indiana University of Pennsylvania prior to joining the faculty and staff at Pitt in the Fall of 2021. Dr. Smith's research interests include merging geospatial technologies (both GIS and remote sensing) with qualitative techniques to understand urban to rural interfaces (peri-urbanization). Recently, her work with ESRI's utility network has expounded upon the application and development of relational databases in the geographic context, database performance enhancement, and user to product applications of GIS technology in the energy/electricity sector. The Duquesne Light operations technology and business support team, of which Dr. Smith is a member, won an ESRI Special Achievement in GIS Award (SAG) for their work with the utility network in 2023.
