We have designed all three programs to provide an excellent foundation for future academic study, to provide practical training for a future career, and to be interesting and relevant. So, how do you decide which one to major in?

Geology

Geology is perfect for people who love science, nature, and variety. Geology combines physics, chemistry, and math with good old-fashioned observational science to understand how the Earth works. This includes such large-scale processes as plate tectonics and the formation of the continents and such small-scale processes such as stream erosion and restoration and how to solve acid mine drainage issues. Career options range from environmental work to petroleum exploration to various federal and state government agencies to geologic engineering.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science is perfect for those whose interests are primarily focused on the surface environment and human interactions with the environment. The program still requires some physics, chemistry, and math, but offers more flexibility in these co-requirements. The Earth science classes focus on surface processes and do not require detailed study of rocks. Career options are mainly in the environmental fields, which include working for environmental consulting firms, government agencies, and corporations who want to ensure that they comply with all environmental regulations.

Environmental Studies

Environmental Studies is ideal for people who are interested in environmental issues, but more as they relate to advocacy, policy, and legal issues. The major provides a sound grounding in environmental sciences in order to ensure that proposed solutions are likely to be practical and effective.
