Conferences

December 7 - 11, 2026: AGU26 Annual Meeting

Every year, AGU’s Annual Meeting convenes over 25,000 attendees from 100+ countries to share scientific findings and make connections. Researchers, scientists, educators, students, policymakers, exhibitors, journalists and communicators attend AGU’s Annual Meeting to better understand our planet and environment, and our role in preserving its future. It is a results-oriented gathering rooted in celebrating and advancing positive individual and collective outcomes.

If you are interested in presenting at AGU26, abstract submissions are open until August 5th. Attendee registration and housing will open in late August. The 2026 AGU Meeting will be held in San Francisco, California.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History: R.W. Moriarty Science Seminar Series

Learn about scientific discoveries directly from the experts in the field during free, hour-long public talks! Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s scientific research staff and invited speakers discuss their latest findings on numerous scientific topics at the R.W. Moriarty Science Seminar series. Events are now listed for Fall 2026 & Spring 2027.

Society of Exploration Geophysicists: 2026 North America Honorary Lecturer

SEG's honorary lecturer for 2026 is Dr. Gerard Schuster, research professor at the University of Utah. His talk, entitled The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly with AI in Geosciences, will be presented on November 10th, at 11 AM, and will be hosted by Seneca Resources at 2000 Westinghouse Drive, Cranberry Township, PA.

Service Opportunities

NextGen Advisory Council

The NextGen Advisory Council was created by DCNR to offer fresh perspectives on public lands, outdoor recreation, and conservation initiatives in Pennsylvania.

Its mission is to:

  • Make outdoor spaces welcoming for all
  • Advocate for inclusive and accessible programs
  • Build and retain a diverse workforce in conservation

By bringing together high school students to young professionals (up to age 35), the council ensures that younger voices play a role in shaping the future of Pennsylvania’s natural resources. The council typically has 20 young, diverse members from across Pennsylvania. No prior experience in conservation or government is needed. A desire to contribute and work toward inclusive conservation and recreation is key.

Expectations include:

  • Attending quarterly meetings on the third Tuesday of January, April, July, and October. These meetings are virtual, featuring talks from department staff and discussions on projects.
  • Joining optional evening meetings for committees and special projects.
  • Committing to an initial three-year term, with the option to extend.

Pittsburgh Geological Society Early-Career Networking Event

Join the Pittsburgh Geological Society for an informal networking event!  Thursday, October 29th, beginning at 6pm, PGS will host working geologists, with an emphasis on those in the first 10 years of their careers, and current college students majoring in geology and related fields.  All PGS members are welcome, even those in mid- and late-career stages.  The focus of the event is to demonstrate professional social etiquette and assist our student members to prepare for the next steps.  We're looking forward to a fun, casual atmosphere where you can catch up with old friends, make some new ones, and maybe even find that next great co-worker from an up-and-coming student!  We will encourage everyone to mix and mingle and discuss their favorite sites, best geological memories, worst bosses, funniest field stories, etc. to build and strengthen all our professional networks.

We'll hold a brief Q&A early in the evening for students to submit questions and get them answered by working professionals.  We'll also have a brief discussion about mentoring from the perspective of both the mentor and protege.

Come to Chimera Brewing (3759 Library Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15234) in Castle Shannon after 6pm on October 29!  PGS will provide appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages, and a full cash bar will be available with terrific on-site beer selections and a full liquor selection.  We look forward to seeing you there!
