Ben Schuler, an undergraduate Senior in Geology, was awarded a Dietrich School Curiosity Grant for $500 to support his work entitled "Identifying volumetric changes and thermal anomaly trends at active volcanoes using ASTER orbital data". Ben has been working on this project with his advisor, Dr. Daniel Williams, for the past year, and has been developing GIS-based workflows to automate the processing of ASTER sensor data. Of importance to his project are Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) which can be used to see how volcanic eruptions affect the landscape through the eruption and then collapse of lava domes, and thermal infrared (TIR) data from which we can observe changing temperatures at the summit of a volcano, that might indicate an impending eruption. The overall aim has been to create easy to use tools that allow for continued volcano monitoring from space. Ben presented this work at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in Washington D.C. in December 2024. Congratulations Ben!
